A biennial festival, the inaugural FEMMEBIT united an all-female roster of nearly 50 Los Angeles based artists working in the field of video and new media. Diversified in their practice yet united in their pursuits, these artists are changing the status quo through utilizing the most cutting-edge forms of self-expression. An experiential screen-based event, FEMMEBIT included live broadcasts of panels and demos, a VR exhibition, and premiered screening programs daily.
Acknowledging a true, interconnected wellspring and force majeure demanding nationwide recognition, FEMMEBIT aimed to frame evolving conversations— from the artist’s identity in a corporate world; the screen as avatar and persona; to how the anatomy of video, as a user’s tool with a malleable architecture, induces narratives for sculpting an empowered female form.
Spanning symposiums to screenings, FEMMEBIT aims to articulate a fluid medium; a dialogue focused on how women working with and between technologies enable progressive ideas through active creation; and how, we, as creators and proponents of this field, must work together to shape, share, and grow a future that is female.
Curated by WOAH and produced with Kate Parsons (FLOAT), Janna Avner (Gil’s Sanctuary), and internationally exhibiting artists Julieta Gil and Giselle Zatonyl.
