• World Premiere Encore: Bill Plympton’s Cheatin,’ at Downtown Independent, DTLA. Bill Plympton’s 7th animated feature follows the fateful romance of Jake & Ella— &the fight through deceit to reclaim their destiny.  With over 40,000 drawings, the film is a surrealist love story & hallmark to Plympton’s signature hand-painted style.  Showtimes through Aug 28. 4pm & 7:30pm
• Screening of The Milky Way, at M+B Gallery, West Hollywood. Christopher Richmond’s latest film follows an unnamed humanoid’s encounters with off-kilter characters on the margins of society— a tale of primordial wandering in a more than less amiss world. 6-8pm
• Vinegar Syndrome!, at Echo Park Film Center, Echo Park. This month’s grab bag of 16mm short educational and ephemeral films is themed around animals— those domestic, furry, feathered, legless… and over legged.  Served with homemade animal crackers. 7pm
• The Early Surrealism of Buñuel, at Cinefamily, West Hollywood. Dry martinis served fresh to Buñuel’s liking for the opening soirée. Screenings of Un Chien Andalou (1929, 35mm) with a newly-restored alternate score & L’Age D’Or (1930)— plus The Obscure Objects of Buñuel, a pop-up exhibit of Buñuel ephemera presented in conjunction with The Luis Buñuel Film Institute.  Showtimes through Aug 27. 7:30pm

• Andy Votel presents: Kleksploitation, at Cinefamily, West Hollywood. US premiere of Kleksploitation, a tribute to ‘reconstituted cinematic synth-pop from Communist Poland’s deepest hallucinogenic hibernation period.’ Plus Votel live-remixes Andrzej Korzynski’s score for the three surreal children’s sci-fi flicks, Pan Kleks. 9:30pm
