Last Look: Wallflower at the Orgy

The WORK Magazine‘ url=’http://www.theworkmag.com/black_board/ariana-papademetropoulos/’ target=’_blank’ size=’small’ style=” color=’grey’] Closing this weekend at SADE is a show where whimsical fantasy and sophisticated reconfiguration marry in a perfect plane. Transforming the angular cubicle walls of the former Night Gallery into an atmospheric scene with hanging ferns and lilac carpet, the painted worlds of Ariana Papademetropoulos envelope us in a picture of a surreal salon. Like the lush and seductive richness of her watermark-tinged canvases, Papademetropoulos reconfigures interior and structural facades to situate us in a reality just beyond. Disassembling images of domesticity, pornography and nature, the fluid interiors of her canvases rupture onto smooth, delicately painted, illusionistic surfaces. Glossy remnants of history are mutated into timeless windows for contemplating spirituality and encountering the supernatural. Beyond suggesting the proximity of transcendence inherent within the codified and stylized environments we inhabit— Papademetropoulos moves us to think about the life of an object and the psychic immortality of place.
